Principles of Pediatric Medication Dosing in India
Children require precise, weight-based calculations (mg/kg) rather than fixed adult tablets to avoid both clinical underdosing and acute toxicity:
- Paracetamol (Acetaminophen): Standard fever dosage is 10 to 15 mg/kg per dose, given every 4 to 6 hours (maximum 60 mg/kg/day). Syrups in India typically come as 120mg/5ml or DS (Double Strength) 250mg/5ml. Always check the bottle packaging.
- Ibuprofen: Given for pain and inflammatory fever at 5 to 10 mg/kg per dose (max 30 mg/kg/day) for infants over 3–6 months.
- Amoxicillin: Standard respiratory infections typically require 40 to 45 mg/kg/day divided into 2 or 3 doses.
